Thirty years was the duration that Mahoney spent as being employed as a secluded nurse. ![]() She acquired her certificate of nursing in 1879, putting her to be the 1st black female American in history to acquire a proficient license for nurse care. The overloading work was too hard for all but four out of 42 students, Mary being one of them successfully finished the nursing course. The nursing program involved numerous hours of lectures and physical patient care. Mahoney, at the age of thirty-three, joined the sixteen-month nursing program at the New England hospital for children and women. At the New England hospital for females and kids, Mahoney did not immediately work as a nurse instead, she occupied occupations such as a janitor, unofficial nurse’s helper, cook, and washerwoman. Mary grew up with her parents, a sister, and one brother in Boston, Massachusetts, where her curiosity in nursing started as a youngster. She was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1845, and her parents were Charles and Mary Jane Stewart Mahoney. ![]() Mary was one of the 1st black affiliates of the American nurses association and has been accredited as one of the 1st females to enroll in the ballot in Boston after the endorsement of the 19th adjustment in 1920. She was born on May 7, 1845, in Boston, Massachusetts, and died in Boston in 1926. The 1st African American female to finish training to become a nurse in 1879 was Mary Mahoney, hence becoming the 1st black African –American nurse to alumna with a nursing degree from the nursing school of the New England for kids and females. ![]()
